These lessons use elearning. Each lesson begins with a quote designed to encourage the student to adopt a positive mindset. What students think about their learning will directly impact how much they learn. There are a total of 162 lessons and on average they take 20 minutes each. If a student did 4 a week they would finish in one school year (10 month plan). Research also shows that you need to be challenged. The lessons require the student to score 80% to move on. This is much simpler than it sounds, after every question it tells you if you were right or not. Students can take notes as they do these, and there is no limit as to how often you can do a lesson. Each lesson is designed to challenge the student so that they cannot be done in a “mindless” way. Just like Vince Lombardi said “Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect”.
Research has shown we learn better when we are actively engaged rather than passively encoding. For example, reading, rereading and highlighting text has been shown to be far less effective at learning than constantly testing yourself and asking questions about what you are learning. Research has shown that every time students do one of these assignments nerve connections in the brain are strengthened. Every question strengthens the students ability to retrieve information. This will allow them to retrieve the information in the future faster and with less energy. (As a result, for NY State students when they do take the Regents exam it will take less time and be less exhausting.)
This program on Earth Science has been tested with real students (more than 500 approaching 1,000) over the last 9 years. Every year I have made modifications based on the results. These students have performed at a very high level (3 standard deviations higher than the average for students from this school). I graduated with a degree in Geology from Rice University, I went to graduate school in Geology at UT Permian Basin, and I have a master’s degree in Special Education from Touro college. I have been teaching Earth Science in inner city public schools for 12 years.
